Former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official Lois Lerner will not get charged for targeting conservative non-profit organizations.

The Department of Justice announced in a letter today that it’s closing a two-year-long investigation into how Lerner used her position at the IRS to improperly intimidate conservative groups. Under her watch, the IRS purposefully withheld tax-exempt status from scores of conservative groups in order to slow them down.

When individuals complained about how the IRS was handling (or intentionally ignoring) tax-exempt applications from conservative non-profits, the agency would intimidate these individuals to keep it under wraps.

Lois Lerner, who was held in contempt by the U.S. House of Representatives for refusing to testify about her actions at the IRS, stepped down from her position in 2013 after investigations probing her actions began. A year into the investigation, the IRS claimed that it lost all of here relevant emails due to a computer crash in 2011.

While it’s clear that the IRS actions were politically motivated–as only the tax-exempt applications for conservative non profits were deliberately targeted and delayed–Obama’s DOJ now says there is no evidence to back that up.

“Based on the evidence developed in this investigation and the recommendation of experienced career prosecutors and supervising attorneys at the department,” the letter from the DOJ reads, “we are closing our investigation and will not seek any criminal charges.”
