After what some would consider a “BORING!” first round of Democratic primary debates, the second night got heated when Kamala Harris and Joe Biden went head-to-head on race. The line of questioning was initially aimed at Pete Buttigieg in light of a police shooting in his home town of South Bend, Indiana.
“Vice President Biden, I do not believe you are a racist,” Harris said. “I also believe — and it’s personal and it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country. It was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing.”
Biden countered saying that while Kamala was working as a prosecutor, he was working as a public defender who fought for civil rights. The record on that doesn’t fully support his story, however, noted David Harsanyi this week:
‘When I marched in the civil rights movement’ is, in fact, something Biden often told crowds before the lie caught up to him during his disastrous 1987 run for the presidency…
There’s no record of Biden ever having marched with civil rights leaders nor of having defended Black Panthers as they were ‘burning down’ Wilmington in 1968…much less having to defend his association with the radical group during his first senatorial campaign. Nor do we know that Biden was a particularly zealous advocate of ‘public housing,’ although it was a plank of the Democratic Party’s platform in Delaware at the time.
Harris also explained her personal story of struggles with integration. “There was a little girl in California who was bused to school. That little girl was me,” Harris said.

The other large revelation that took place on the debate stage during the second round was that all 10 candidates wanted to offer taxpayer-paid health care to illegal immigrants.
Democrats have used “health care is a right, not a privilege” as a talking point for a while now, but now they’re taking it to the next level. Despite how fiscally and logistically impossible it would be to provide socialized medicine to every American, now the Democrats want to offer this magical, utopic dream to illegal immigrants as well. It will be interesting to see how the far more moderate Democratic base voters react to policy proposals such as this one.
Donald Trump surely had time to make his point. He claimed that by offering this ridiculous incentive, the Democrats are handing him the next election.
