On TV yesterday, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews mistook Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., for Jamie Harrison, a Democrat running to oust South Carolinia Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Matthews said he thought Graham was standing next to his opponent, Harrison. “I see [Graham] standing next to the guy [he’s] gonna beat, maybe,” Matthews said.

His co-workers corrected him, noting the man standing next to Graham was Scott, the state’s other Republican senator.

“Oh, it’s the other senator. What am I saying? Big mistake. Mistaken identity, sir, sorry,” Matthews said in response.

Awkward!

Matthew’s on-air comment comes the same day a journalist named Lauren Bassett accused Matthews of making inappropriate comments to her.

In 2016, Bassett joined Matthews for an appearance on “Hardball.” In a GQ article, Bassett writes: “Matthews looked over at me in the makeup chair next to him and said, ‘Why haven’t I fallen in love with you yet?’ When I laughed nervously and said nothing, he followed up to the makeup artist. ‘Keep putting makeup on her, I’ll fall in love with her.’”

Matthews has yet to comment on his remarks about Scott and Harrison or his comments to Bassett.
